The Public Policy Institute of Marion County will release its 2009 Study: Kinship Care during the Kids Central Inc. Kinship Care 3rd Annual Kinship Conference on Friday, Sept. 18, at Central Florida Community College.

PPI Director Crystal Flynn and Kinship Care Study Coordinator Jean Imes will present the 2009 key findings and recommendations during the noon to 12:30 presentation at CFCC’s Ewers Century Center, 3001 S.W. College Road. To register to attend the event, call Kids Central Inc. at 352-873-6332.

"Many kinship care providers find themselves in that role unexpectedly and are quickly overwhelmed by the physical, financial and emotional stresses of care giving," Imes said. "Over the course of the kinship care study, it was clear that care givers need assistance. They need an advocate who understands both the demands of care giving as well as the best way to connect care givers with available resources."

The report will also be available for free download from the PPI Web site, http://ppiofmarioncounty.cf.edu beginning Sept. 18, and additional public release presentations are tentatively scheduled.

"Major recommendations outline a response to this critical need for assistance and key recommendations include a plan of providing access to support and services to kinship caregivers through the establishment of a Kinship Care Advisory Board," Flynn said. "The board would be charged with appointing a Kinship Care Advocacy Coordinator and overseeing a task force of Kinship Care Volunteer Advocates.

In February 2009, the Public Policy Institute 2009 Kinship Care Study Committee began a six-month research process to analyze and evaluate existing resources and services and to develop recommendations that can be implemented locally to enhance access to kinship care support in Ocala/Marion County.

Meeting on a weekly basis, study co-chairs William D’Aiuto and Major Patti Lumpkin led weekly sessions of kinship care professionals, agency representatives, educators, business and industry leaders, and concerned citizens, as they heard from more than 18 speakers on a broad range of related topics. Study highlights included a Kinship Care seminar featuring keynote speaker Helene LaBrecque Ellis, author and noted kinship care authority. An additional six weeks were devoted to analysis of the findings and development of recommendations.

Established in 1999 and conveniently located in the Ewers Century Center at Central Florida Community College, PPI is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, citizen-based organization dedicated to advancing public interest, building democracy and community, and improving the quality of life by involving citizens in addressing community issues. Additional information regarding the organization including past studies and seminars, a schedule of meetings and upcoming events, and membership is available by visiting the institute online or calling 352-291-4433.

Central Florida Community College will host a week of free lectures and the creation of a sand mandala in conjunction with "Sacred Music, Sacred Dance," performances by the monks of Drepung Loseling Monastery.

In "Sacred Music," Tibetan lamas in magnificent costumes sing and play horns, trumpets, drums and bells to promote world healing and share Tibetan culture. On the outer level they represent the world in its divine form; on the inner level they represent a map by which the ordinary human mind is transformed into an enlightened mind; and on the secret level they depict primordially perfect balance of the subtle energies of the body and the clear, light dimension of the mind.

Her paintings, prints, photographs and fine crafts are represented in both private and public collections. She resides in Hernando.

Central Florida Community College will present "An Evening with Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass" on Wednesday, Oct. 14.

The Chautauqua-style performance will feature scholars George Frein and Charles Pace presenting excerpts from speeches by Lincoln and Douglass. The program begins at 7 p.m. in the Ewers Century Center at the Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. The event is free and open to the public.

President Abraham Lincoln and fiery abolitionist Frederick Douglass, men of humble origin, extraordinary eloquence, and powerful personality, met three times in the White House between 1863 and 1865. These self-educated, self-made men cultivated an extraordinary relationship that helped to shape their views on race, slavery and democracy.

Frein and Pace vividly depict the nature of these historic White House encounters and the program offers the audience an opportunity to hear the words that shaped the nation’s understanding of the Civil War.

After the presentation, a question/answer period for audience members to interact with Lincoln and Douglass will take place, along with time to question the scholars about how they prepared for the performance.

"The presentation will bring history to life and promote discussion about dignity, this year’s Learning Theme at CFCC," said Andrew Jenkins, CFCC assistant professor of Communications. " 'An Evening with Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass' dovetails with our Learning Theme text, ‘Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass,' and will spur productive conversations about human dignity in moments of adversity."

The program is sponsored by CFCC and the Florida Humanities Council. For information contact Dr. Ron Cooper at 352-854-2322, ext. 1295.

Central Florida Community College is going green, now more than ever!

CFCC has been awarded Silver LEED certification for renovation of Founders Hall at the Ocala Campus. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design designation of the U.S. Green Building Council is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

The CFCC District Board of Trustees recognized members of the project team at its Tuesday meeting.

"Central Florida Community College is working to set an example for sustainability at our campuses and in the community," said Dr. Charles Dassance, CFCC president. "The Founders Hall designation is testament to our commitment for responsible stewardship of our resources."

Founders Hall, the oldest building at the college, was constructed in 1959. When the aging structure was set for renovation in 2008, college leaders requested that sustainable features be part of the plan. LEED certification is based green design and construction features that positively impact the project itself and the broader community.

Features of Founders Hall include:
- low-flow restroom fixtures, which reduce water usage by 35 percent
- room occupancy sensors for lighting
- native vegetation and water efficient landscaping
- materials with recycled content
- regional materials.

The CFCC Citrus Learning and Conference Center — set to open in October — was designed was similar features.

"The green building movement offers an unprecedented opportunity to respond to the most important challenges of our time, including global climate change, dependence on nonsustainable and expensive sources of energy and threats to human health," said Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO and founding chair of the U.S. Green Building Council.

CFCC has demonstrated its commitment to sustainability in a number of ways, including implementation of an Internet-based platform for online and hybrid courses; online applications for admission, financial aid and employment; online versions of credit and noncredit schedules, manuals and other publications; and the elimination of free student printing.

College Moves Toward Name Change

Central Florida Community College will begin the process of changing its name, following approval by the CFCC District Board of Trustees at its Tuesday meeting.

In 2009, the Florida Legislature adopted legislation to replace the Florida Community College System with the Florida College System, adopted a process for the approval of new baccalaureate degrees by institutions in the system, and established a process for how a community college would change its name.

"Changing the name of the college is a significant decision," said Dr. Charles Dassance, CFCC president. "The basic, philosophical underpinning of the college will not change. The college is a community-based, locally governed institution providing open access and promoting learning in an open, caring, inclusive environment."

The approval is the first step in the process, which will include surveying the college and greater communities. Once approved, the name change would become effective July 1, 2010.

This is not the first name change for the college, which was created as Central Florida Junior College in 1957 by action of the Florida Legislature. CFJC merged with Hampton Junior College in 1966 and the name was changed to Central Florida Community College in 1972.

Several state colleges have changed names in the past several months including Daytona State College, Northwest Florida State College, Santa Fe College and Seminole State College of Florida.
