Central Florida Community College has been awarded a $100,000 grant for adult education at the CFCC Levy Center and is one of only four state colleges to receive an award in the Transition Program for Adult Learners into Postsecondary Education.
"CFCC is committed to increasing opportunities for adult learners and this grant will allow the college to provide the resources for individuals to become successful postsecondary students," said Dr. Charles Dassance, CFCC president.
The grant will be used to develop a program for assisting adult education students in making successful transitions from adult education to postsecondary education, according to Joan Luebbe, Adult Education coordinator at the Levy Center. Planning and curriculum development are under way and the program will begin with the fall semester.
"The CFCC program will include support services specific to adult learners with the goal of pursuing postsecondary education, curriculum development targeting adult learners, professional development for staff, faculty and administrators, collaborations between agencies and departments of the college, as well as program evaluation to measure effectiveness," Luebbe said.
The grant is funded by the U.S. Department of Education through the Florida Department of Education in response to what has become known as the "2020 Challenge." In February 2009, President Barack Obama set a goal for America to once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020.
The CFCC Levy Center is located at 114 Rodgers Blvd. in Chiefland. For more information, call Luebbe at 352-493-9533.
