Ocala Mayor Randall Ewers will kick off Mathematics Awareness Month at Central Florida Community College on Monday, April 5.

Ewers will present a proclamation from the city of Ocala declaring April Mathematics Awareness Month in a ceremony that begins at noon in Building 7, Room 111, at the CFCC Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. This is the 10th year that the college has participated in the national awareness month, which this year focuses on mathematics and sports.

"We are excited to partner with the mayor and the city to increase public understanding and appreciation for mathematics," said Selestine Washington-Poole, CFCC instructional assistant. "Sports provides a great link for individuals who sometimes have difficulty grasping mathematical concepts."

Following Ewers’ presentation, Dr. Barbara Burrows, CFCC vice president of Instructional Affairs, will comment on how mathematics and sports influenced her career. Instructor Jerry Meyerson will demonstrate how to calculate a quarterback rating. Professional Golfers’ Association of America member and Citrus Campus instructor John Land will demonstrate the ties between mathematics and golf.

CFCC will follow up with a full schedule of activities for students on Wednesday, April 21. For information about participating, contact Washington-Poole at 352-854-2322, ext. 1259.

Mathematics Awareness Month is a project of the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics, which is a collaborative effort of the American Mathematical Society, the American Statistical Association, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
