The College of Central Florida will host an open house in observance of Math Awareness Month on Wednesday, April 20. Community members are invited to join CF students and staff to learn about the complex systems in our world that relate to mathematics.

The event will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in Building 7 at the CF Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. There is no charge to attend.

"Unraveling Complex Systems" is the theme for Mathematics Awareness Month and explores how epidemics spread, birds flock, fish school, hurricane and stock markets operate.

In addition to student displays, there will be presentations by community representatives. Sarah Damien from the Discovery Science Center of Ocala will share fun science activities to explore with your children over the summer. Doug Peebles and Chad Lynch from the Conservation and Public Education Department of Ocala Utility Services will enlighten attendees on the power of the power grid and how to take control of your electric bill. Pat Stefanski from the Marion County Department of Emergency Management will answer questions about hurricane preparedness: where to go, what to take, and what to do if a warning is fast approaching.

Mathematics Awareness Month is held each April by the American Mathematical Society, the American Statistical Association, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Mathematics Awareness Month is sponsored by the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics.
