The College of Central Florida will honor Dr. Charles R. Dassance, president of the college, at a retirement reception on Wednesday, April 27. The reception begins at 4 p.m. and will be held in the Citrus Learning and Conference Center at the Citrus Campus, 3800 S. Lecanto Highway in Lecanto.

Dassance, who is 66 this month, will retire this summer. He indicated that this was the most difficult decision of his 44 years as a community college educator.

"The college is doing well and after nearly 15 years as president, I decided this was the right time for the college to transition to new leadership," he said.

Dassance has helped create a culture of community with his commitment to the college’s core values of integrity, service, responsibility and dignity. Employees take pride in their work and are passionate about the college mission. The college culture supports individual growth and development and asks all employees to be part of the leadership of the college.

Foundation assets have grown from $12.5 million in 1996 to more than $76.6 million today, a 500 percent increase. His support of alumni initiatives and annual fund campaigns demonstrates to the community that the college is strong from the inside out.

Enrollment has grown from 6,100 in fall 1997 to 8,800 today, a 44 percent increase. Programs have been added or expanded to meet the needs of the dynamic communities the college serves and include equine studies, nursing, teacher education, and the CF Institute, which supports business and industry. CF became the College of Central Florida and baccalaureate programs are being offered through the college and its University Center partners.

Commitment to community has been demonstrated with the addition of the Appleton Museum of Art and the creation of the Public Policy Institute and Heart of Florida Regional Coalition, among others. A culture of service has been created and is demonstrated in partnerships with American Heart Association, March of Dimes, Light the Night, United Way, and others.

The landscapes of CF campuses and centers have changed significantly with the addition or renovation of the Bryant Student Union, Citrus Learning and Conference Center, Ewers Century Center, Enterprise Center, Fine Arts Auditorium, Hampton Center and University Center. Land has been secured for a new Levy Campus. One thousand trees have been planted and are a visual reminder of the focus on sustainability.
