“Healthy ‘Art’ Styles” opens Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the College of Central Florida Webber Gallery, 3001 S.W. College Road, Ocala. Admission is free.

The exhibit explores the positive results of art therapy on patients and features artists Holly Hanessian and Kathy Hettinga, along with photos from UF Health Shands Arts in Medicine and AXIS Dance Company.

Hettinga, a digital artist and photographer whose work is featured in the book “The Next Generation,” said being a cancer patient gave her art new perspective.

"My work explains the process I was in,” said Hettinga. “The terror of cancer; the poisoning, yet healing work of chemotherapy…the loss of identity as a successful workaholic artist/designer; to the new work documenting the fascination and new-to-me world of health care givers, modern medical imaging, and men who heal in a world of blue and green outfits complete with head gear and shoe nets.”

The exhibit was curated by Tyrus Clutter, assistant professor of Art and Art History at CF.

The closing reception will be held Monday, Nov. 3, from 5:30-7 p.m. After the reception, AXIS Dance Company will perform in the Dassance Fine Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. The company performs “physically integrated dance,” a contemporary dance form that evolves from the collaboration between dancers with and without disabilities. To purchase tickets, call the CF Box Office at 352-873-5810 or visit tickets.cf.edu.

The Webber Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is closed Saturdays, Sundays and college holidays. For more information call 352-873-5809.

About John Hechinger and the Hechinger Collection:
John Hechinger’s father founded the Hechinger Hardware store in 1911, but it was John Hechinger along with his brother-in-law who grew the store into a renowned chain throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Hechinger is often credited as one of the major figures in the transformation of the neighborhood hardware store to the “do-it-yourself” home improvement business. A fourth generation Washingtonian, community patron and activist, Hechinger was appointed by President Lyndon Johnson to be the first chairman of the D.C. City Council. He used his position to advocate for civil rights and diverse neighborhoods. Hechinger’s donation of his collection to IA&A for the purpose of sharing it with a broader public is yet another invaluable legacy. In the 1980s, Hechinger’s booming chain of hardware stores led him to purchase a new company headquarters. He found the offices to be efficient, but sterile. The barren space sparked an initiative to beautify the headquarters which launched Hechinger’s acquisition of a tool-inspired collection of diverse 20th century art.

College of Central Florida Theatre students will present “Mother Hicks” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22-25, and at 3 p.m. Oct. 26, in the Dassance Fine Arts Center at the CF Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

Set in and around Ware, Illinois, during the Great Depression, “Mother Hicks” is a play about three outsiders — a foundling girl, a deaf boy and an eccentric recluse, Mother Hicks, who is suspected of being a witch.

The tale, told with poetry and sign language, chronicles the journeys of these three to find themselves, and each other, in a troubled time. The Saturday, Oct. 25, performance will be interpreted for the deaf.

CF Assistant Professor of Visual and Performing Arts Rob O’Brien said the production is a great fit for student actors.

“Mother Hicks is about discarded people and how we treat each other,” said O’Brien. “I have challenged our set design team to create the world of Mother Hicks from all discarded items. The actors must tap into a time when they have not felt included in their lives. This show has so much heart. It is one of my favorites and everyone is having such a great time.”

Tickets for the show are $12 for adults and $6 for non-CF students. CF students, faculty and staff receive free admission to the show with CF ID. For information and tickets, call 352-873-5810 in Marion County, or 352-746-6721, ext. 5810, in Citrus County. To purchase tickets online, visit tickets.CF.edu.

The College of Central Florida will screen “Age of the Mind,” a documentary about Florida Gov. Farris Bryant’s 1961-1965 term in office, Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Dassance Fine Arts Center at the CF Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

The 58-minute film traces the challenges of the early 1960s – America's reach for space, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the constant need for economic growth and development.

The fast-paced video tells the story of Bryant, a native Floridian who seemed to have little chance to fulfill his mother’s belief that he would one day be governor. Viewers will learn how Bryant chose the path of the Florida Turnpike, how he navigated the Civil Rights movement and refused a plea to join Alabama Gov. George Wallace’s federal disobedience, and how he handled the state’s sudden influx of Cubans seeking freedom.

“Age of the Mind” was produced by two of Bryant’s daughters, who lived much of its content in the Governor’s Mansion, and have since enjoyed successful law and film careers.
A discussion, led by University of South Florida Professor Emeritus Gary Mormino, will follow the 7 p.m. screening.

Mormino, a historian and award-winning author, wrote “The Immigrant World of Ybor City,” for which he received the Theodore Saloutos Prize for the outstanding book in ethnic-immigration history. In 2003, he was named Florida Humanities Council’s first Humanist of the Year, and in 2006, his book “Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams: A Social History of Modern Florida” was awarded the Charlton Tebeau Prize by the Florida Historical Society.

Light refreshments will be served at both screenings. There is no fee to attend.

The Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida, will once again host “A Dickens Christmas: The Urban Family Holiday Collection,” Saturday, Nov. 15, through Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015.

Enjoy the collection and create paper ornaments during the Appleton’s free Family Day, Saturday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“The Urban Family Holiday Collection” is the private collection of Ocala cardiologist Dr. Paul Urban, his wife, Joyce, and their daughters, Katie, Kristie, Kassie and Karlie.

As a child in Philadelphia, Joyce Urban found herself mesmerized by Christmas decorations in department store windows as she walked to see Santa Claus. After marrying Dr. Urban, she acquired her favorite piece in the collection, a porcelain Santa kneeling before baby Jesus. In 1989, Mrs. Urban chose, in the spirit of Christmas, to share her collection with the public. Today, the Appleton displays part of her collection annually to honor the holidays.

The lobby and first floor galleries will feature decorated trees, miniature villages, nutcracker soldiers and other items collected over the years by the Urban family.

In addition to temporary exhibitions, the Appleton Museum of Art presents a permanent collection of European, American and contemporary art, plus Asian, African, Islamic and pre-Columbian artifacts and antiquities. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday and closed on Monday, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Owned and operated by College of Central Florida, the Appleton Museum of Art is located at 4333 E. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala, east of downtown on SR40 (exit 352 east off I-75 or exit 268 west off I-95). Free parking is available. CF Musical Theatre Ensemble Presents 'Godspell'

The College of Central Florida Musical Theatre Ensemble will present “Godspell” Nov. 14-15 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. in the Dassance Fine Arts Center at the CF Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

A pre-performance reception will be held Friday, Nov. 14, from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Webber Center. The reception is free, and guests may view the Visual Artists’ Society “Best of the Season” art exhibit on display in the adjoining Webber Gallery.

“‘Godspell’ is essentially a reimagining of the Gospel as an improv variety show,” said John Guarente, CF assistant professor of Music.

Based on the book of Matthew, “Godspell” opens with the overlapping noise of various philosophers such as Socrates, Nietzsche and Sartre declaring their respective views on the human condition.

To clear the air, John the Baptist enters to the sound of a shofar, telling the audience, “Prepare ye the way of the Lord.” The show then begins in earnest, and Jesus takes each member of the company under his wing one by one, inviting them to partake in the lessons of the Gospels. In a sense, the members of the cast learn the parables as they act as disciples and gradually come to understand Jesus’ teachings and the Kingdom of God.

In the second half of the play, the tone turns darker as the priests and Pharisees are threatened by Jesus’ teachings. The cast then becomes increasingly anxious and concerned about what is to come. Judas, who has been playing devil’s advocate to Jesus throughout the show, eventually alienates himself from the rest of the company in order to betray Jesus by handing him over for arrest and crucifixion. Jesus dies on the cross, and the cast carries his body away in an uplifting recessional, singing, “Long live God!”

Music and new lyrics for “Godspell” were written by Stephen Schwartz.

Tickets for the show are $12 for adults and $6 for non-CF students. CF students, faculty and staff receive free admission to the show with proof of a CF ID. For information and tickets, call 352-873-5810 or 352-746-6721, ext. 5810. To purchase tickets online, visit Tickets.CF.edu.

The Cherrywood Veteran’s Club will present a Patriot Service Dog to the College of Central Florida on Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11. Once completely trained, the dog will be presented to a wounded veteran.

The golden Labrador, which has been named Patriot in honor of the CF Patriots, is being trained and housed at Lowell Correctional Facility. The female inmates create a brighter future for veterans and themselves through WOOF, Women Offering Obedience and Friendship.

“Service dogs are presented to wounded service men and women with post-traumatic stress disorder, mobility disabilities or loss of a limb,” said Julie Drexel, a CF student and trainer with the WOOF program. “The dogs are trained to open doors by pushing a handicapped button, carry and retrieve items including a telephone, help with shopping and laundry. They also play an important role in balancing, bracing and calming the men and women they serve.”

Currently six dogs are being trained at Lowell Correctional, including Hero, who has been attending classes at CF with Drexel as he nears the end of his two-year training period. The dogs are brought into the community periodically to enhance training in varied settings. They visit nursing homes, hospitals, libraries and schools.

The Cherrywood Veterans Club will present Patriot to CF President Jim Henningsen and Chris Knife, executive director of the CF Foundation, at a luncheon Nov. 11.

“This project is a great example of synergy created when organizations come together,” said Dr. Jim Henningsen, CF president. “Norman Straus, a longtime friend of the college, is a member of the SPCA, or Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Through the organization, he met CF student Julie Drexel, a volunteer with the service dog program. Together, they worked with the Cherrywood Veterans Club to sponsor the puppy in honor of the college. Norman is a connector that brought us all together.

“While a veteran will ultimately receive the pup named Patriot, we all benefit from the collaboration,” said Henningsen.

While it costs $2,500 to sponsor a dog, there is no fee for the receiving veteran.

The Belleview High School Diamondback Dance Company will join the CF Dance Ensemble to present work recently performed at the Florida High School Dance Festival. West Port High School dancers will also present a recent work.

The performance will conclude with the debut of a new piece choreographed by University of Florida dance professor Angela DeFiore. “#Selfie” explores the obsession of sharing via social media and attempts to answer the question, “Are selfies beautiful, interesting or just obnoxious?”

Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for non-CF students, and CF students, faculty and staff are free with ID. Call the Box Office at 352-873-5810 for tickets or visit tickets.cf.edu for more information.
