CF Welcomes Community to Preview Night

The College of Central Florida invites students, parents and community members to 2012 Preview Night on Thursday, March 1. The event will be held 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the Ewers Century Center at the Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

The college will showcase the many career and educational opportunities available at CF with exhibits and workshops on dual enrollment, admissions and financial aid, workforce and certificate programs, teacher education opportunities, and advanced degrees including CF’s new baccalaureate programs and those offered through CF’s university partners. Visit one or several of the information sessions.

“Preview Night provides an opportunity for our community to see what options are available at CF,” said Teri Little-Berry, director of Admissions and Records.

Learn About 4-Year Degree Programs

The College of Central Florida will hold information sessions on Monday, Feb. 20, for four-year degree programs in Early Childhood Education and Business and Organizational Management. Sessions will be held at noon and 5:30 p.m. in the lobby of the University Center at the Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

The sessions will offer general information about admission and financial aid, as well as details about the programs that are offered: the Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education, Prekindergarten/Primary Education and the Bachelor of Applied Science in Business and Organizational Management with specializations in Agribusiness Management, Health Care Management, Management Information Systems and Public Safety Administration.

The college has been granted Level II accreditation to offer baccalaureate degrees by its accrediting organization, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Hampton Film Series Presents 'The Blind Side'

The College of Central Florida will present the film “The Blind Side” on Friday, Feb. 17. The showing is free and begins at 6 p.m. at the CF Hampton Center, 1501 W. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala.

“The Blind Side,” which was released in 2009, is based on the true story of Michael Oher, a homeless black teen who becomes an All American football player. The 129-minute film was directed by John Lee Hancock. It is rated PG-13 for a scene involving brief violence, drug and sexual references.

The film is the second of the year in the Hampton Center Film Series, a cultural and educational outreach program. The series presents three enlightening films, each followed by a brief discussion. “Stand and Deliver” will be featured on March 9. The series is sponsored by the CF International Film Series, the CF Foundation and The Sircle Inc.

CF to Offer Grantsmanship Course

The College of Central Florida will offer a course on grant writing for nonprofit agencies and governmental units.

Grantsmanship: All You Need to Know to Get Started will meet from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 1, at the CF Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. Participants will learn how to research potential funding sources, complete a grant application, and increase their agency’s chances of obtaining funds. The fee is $109.

CF Course on Getting Paid to Talk

The College of Central Florida will offer a course on voice-over business opportunities.

Getting Paid to Talk will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27, at the CF Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. The interactive class will cover the voice-over business, income potential and how to have a demo produced. Students will also have the opportunity to practice recording and hear the results. The fee is $49.

Computer Repair, Troubleshooting Course at CF

The College of Central Florida will offer a course to help computer owners keep their machines operating in peak condition.

Computer Repair and Troubleshooting will meet from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, Feb. 21 through March 6, at the CF Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. The fee is $69.
In this course, participants will learn how computers work; how to disassemble, configure and assemble to basic computer; and how to install the Windows operating system. They will also learn about immediate maintenance, upgrade and repair.

The College of Central Florida will offer a computer basics course for senior learners.

Computers for Seniors I will meet 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 18 through March 3, at the CF Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. The course fee is $45. Begin with an overview of the computer including basic software systems, Internet usage, email and Windows. No computer experience is necessary.

CF Plans Day of Caring at Evangeline Apartments

Faculty, staff and students of the College of Central Florida will celebrate a United Way Day of Caring at Evangeline Booth Garden Apartments on Saturday, Feb. 25.

For more than a decade, CF has partnered with the independent seniors at the apartment complex managed by the Salvation Army. Volunteers will engage residents with cosmetology services, a car wash, games, heavy lifting, some light cleaning, and more.

The activities will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the apartment complex, 2921 N.E. 14th St., Ocala.

"CF is honored to work with Evangeline Booth Garden Apartments,” said Mac Dismuke, manager of CF Learning Support Centers and a volunteer. “Employees and students volunteering their time, talent and resources to help improve the lives of these residents shows one small part of the commitment CF has to the community. It epitomizes our institutional values of integrity, service, responsibility and dignity.”

CF Manager of Grants Development Earns Credential

Bob Hawkins, manager of Grants Development for the College of Central Florida, has earned a nationally recognized credential in the grants field. The recognition is conferred by the Grant Professionals Certification Institute Inc., an affiliate of the Grant Professionals Association.

Hawkins, who has held his position at CF for more than six years, is one of 331 certified grant designers and managers who were conferred the GPC title as Grant Professional Certified. The credential recognizes proficiency in standards that include tenure in the profession, education, demonstrated achievement and a commitment to service for public and private philanthropy.

Hawkins is the sole grants development professional at CF, which is awarded an average of 30 grants per year valued at $3 million to $4 million for college programs. Citrus Campus to Offer Backyard Birding Course

The College of Central Florida will offer Backyard Birding course at the Citrus Campus, 3800 S. Lecanto Highway, Lecanto.

The class will meet Wednesdays, Feb. 15 and 22, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Dorothea G. Jerome Building, Room 102. The course fee is $35. Participants will learn how to provide the best habitat for birds while learning about those native to Florida in this fun and information class.

CNA Refresher Course at CF Levy Center

The College of Central Florida Levy Center will begin a Refresher Course for Certified Nursing Assistants on Monday, March 19. This 16-hour program is intended for nonpracticing Certified Nursing Assistants who would like to re-enter the field and CNAs who have allowed their license to lapse and need to retake the state licensure exam.

The class will meet Mondays and Wednesdays, March 19 through 28, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. The course fee is $149 and no textbook is required.

The course consists of a pre-assessment testing and review of theory as well as a thorough review and practice of the core CNA skills. This course cannot be taken as a substitute for a regular CNA course and it is not an exam prep course.

Students may enroll in person at the Levy Center, 114 Rodgers Blvd., Chiefland, or online at CFItraining.cf.edu (select Levy noncredit classes). Deadline for enrollment is Friday, March 9. The college will be closed for spring break March 12-16.

CF Citrus Campus Offers Computer Courses

The College of Central Florida will offer two computer courses beginning Feb. 24 at the Citrus Campus, 3800 S. Lecanto Highway, Lecanto.

Intermediate Computer Repair and Troubleshooting will meet on Fridays, Feb. 24 and March 2, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Dorothea G. Jerome Building, Room 201B. The course fee is $69. The hands-on course will enable students to troubleshoot and repair specific problems on a personal computer.

Computers for Seniors II will meet on Fridays, Feb. 24 through March 9, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Dorothea G. Jerome Building, Room 201B. The course fee is $45. Students will learn how to organize and customize a desktop, search the Internet more efficiently and perform downloads.

CF International Film Series Presents 'Milk'

The College of Central Florida International Film Series will present “Milk,” a biography on gay activist and politician Harvey Milk.

The film will be shown on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida, 4333 E. Silver Springs Blvd. and at 7 p.m. at the CF Ocala Campus in Building 8, Room 110, 3001 S.W. College Road.

At the Appleton, viewers pay museum admission unless they are a museum member or a patron of the CF International Film Series. Series membership is $15 for individuals, $25 for dual membership and includes a bonus film each year. For information about membership, call 352-873-5808. The viewing is free at CF.

Released in 2008, “Milk” shows the later part of Harvey Milk’s life and pursuit of gay rights to become California’s first openly gay elected official. It stars Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Emile Hirsch. “Milk” was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won two for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Penn. This film is rated R for language, some sexual content and brief violence.

CF Senior Learning Institute Offers Free Class Session

The Senior Learning Institute at the College of Central Florida is offering a free class session during March Membership Enhancement Month. Individuals who are 50 and older are invited to sit in on one of 10 classes offered during March, including Basic Spreadsheets, Gentle Yoga, Our Night Sky and Understanding the U.S. Constitution.

Individuals who attend a class may also enter a drawing for a free annual membership to the Senior Learning Institute, which offers a variety of cultural and community activities each year in addition to the courses. The Senior Learning Institute’s annual membership fee is $125 and allows participants to enroll in any course offered by the institute for $8. Most courses are held at the CF Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

The College of Central Florida will host an open house with its University Center partners on Wednesday, Feb. 29, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the lobby of the University Center at the Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

Representatives of Barry University, Capella University, College of Central Florida, Saint Leo University, University of Central Florida, University of Florida and Webster University will be available to answer questions about bachelor’s and master’s degree programs offered at the University Center and online. Refreshments will be provided by Capella University and Starbucks.

CF Theatre to Present Shakespeare's 'Tempest'

College of Central Florida Theatre will present “The Tempest” at the Ocala Campus in March.

Performances will be held Wednesday through Friday, March 28-31, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 1, at 3 p.m. in the Charles R. Dassance Fine Arts Center, 3001 S.W. College Road. Doors open to the public 30 minutes before each performance. Regular admission is $12 for adults and $6 for students. CF student admission is free for all performances with CF ID.

“Our version of Shakespeare’s ‘Tempest’ is a lively adaptation of the Bard’s original work,” said Robert O’Brien, CF assistant professor of theatre. “‘The Tempest’ is all about Prospero’s magic brought to life through the collaboration of all of the theatrical elements available to us. Our production is a little bit of ‘Shakespeare du Soleil.’”

The College of Central Florida will offer a Certified Nursing Assistant program in March at the CF Hampton Center, 1501 W. Silver Springs Blvd. in Ocala.

This program prepares the individual for work as a nursing assistant in nursing homes and prepares students to take the Florida CNA exam. The course consists of classroom instruction as well as lab practice and clinical experience. The class will meet Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 26 through May 17, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The course fee is $589 and a textbook is required. A high school diploma or GED is not required. Students must complete the Test of Adult Basic Education before enrolling.

'Faith-a-Palooza' at CF Wednesday

The College of Central Florida will hold its spring “Faith-a-Palooza” interfaith discussion on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

Community members are invited to share their thoughts and engage in discussion and light refreshments with representatives from a variety of local faith communities, CF students, faculty and staff from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Ewers Century Center, Room 108, at the Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

The event is sponsored by the CF student club PANTS, Pantheist, Agnostic, Non-Theist Society. There will be no admission fee for this event, but canned food donations to support Operation Backpack are encouraged.

“One of the primary missions of the club is to reinforce the important values of tolerance and understanding through open dialogue with members of CF’s diverse faith communities,” said Dr. Peter D. Smith, associate professor of Humanities. “Our intent is to encourage co-existence among neighbors of different faiths. This will provide the overarching topic for discussion, but we also hope that dialogue will be free-flowing.”

Learn QuickBooks 2011 at CF Ocala Campus

The College of Central Florida will offer a QuickBooks 2011 Comprehensive course in March at the Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. The class will meet on Thursdays, March 1 through April 12, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

In the hands-on course, students will learn how to set up and maintain a QuickBooks company, learn about customer invoices, vendor bills, inventory, sales taxes, banking activity and reconciling, payroll, reports and more. The course fee is $109. A textbook is also required.

Hampton Center to Host HIV/AIDS Awareness Program

The College of Central Florida will host “Silence is Death,” an HIV/AIDS advocacy and awareness program on Saturday, March 3, at the Hampton Center, 1501 W. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala.
